The Mod Musical Critical Evaluation: *** out of **** "Shout!" at Drury Lane Theatre Water Tower Place starring Amanda Danskin, Lauren Fijol, Megan Long, Danielle Plisz, Maggie Portman and Amy Steele. Photos by Michael Brosilow. "Shout! The Mod Musical" is a show that rings true to the "children of the 60's." It is officially a musical but came off more like a revue as there is a very thin story line. The group of women that star in this show are dressed in specific colors that each corresponds with a certain personality type of that era. The story centers around a fictional magazine called Shout that gives the women advice and adds comical quips throughout the 60's and 70's. There are short explorations of each of the women's lives but issues like the pill, drugs, sex and marriage are addressed mostly in a funny way. The jazzy scenery by David Gallo and the groovy costumes by Philip Heckman were very appropriate, colorful and suited the women well. The Green Girl (Danielle Plisz) persona, appropriately so as some say the color green means you're horny, was the slut of the group who often had the audience in stitches. Her eggerated interpretations of sexual stereotypes for then and now were hysterical and often had me giggling in my seat. The Red Girl (Megan Long) was another scene stealer as she was the persona of awkward and goofy that didn't always know how to act appropriately in different life situations. The other girls had to coach her and explain to her the smoother ways to pursue goals in life. The women sang many well known songs including "Son of a Preacher Man," "Shout!," and "Downtown" with good harmonies, but unfortunately not all of the songs were as grabbing or engaging due to lack of performance energy. The choreography was pretty basic with similar formations throughout that became monotonous at times. When they used the set as part of their movements, it spiced it up a bit. Overall, this was mostly fun to watch especially for those audience members who lived through those historic times. "Shout!" is about 95 minutes in running time with no intermission. It plays at the Drury Lane Theatre Water Tower Place 175 E. Chestnut Street, Chicago through June 22, 2008. Tickets are $45-$55 and available at Broadway in Chicago Box Offices 24. W. Randolph St., 151 W. Randolph St. and 18 W. Monroe or by calling 312-902-1400. For further information, visit www.shoutthemodmusical.com or www.broadwayinchicago.com. The Mod Musical Brings the 60's Back to Chicago Review by Ruth Smerling
"Shout!" unfolds on a stage covered with psychedelic artifacts, utilizes the talents of four young ladies. Rather than characters, they play a series of universal character traits with Lauren Fijol as the elegant and leggy Blue Girl, Megan Long the nerdy and cerebral Red Girl, Maggie Portman is the conscientious and mischevious Yellow Girl, the beautiful Amy Steele is Orange Girl and Danielle Plisz has the most challenging role as Green Girl, a little bit of a slut. Together they travel down memory lane belting out one hit after another. After each ensemble number they freeze in the style of Rowan and Martins hit comedy series "Laugh-In," focusing on one of the girls particular take on the world on the world around her. The only bad thing about "Shout!" is that its over too quickly. Its 90 minutes without intermission of sheer fun, fond memories and a lot of laughs.
