Real Life Love Story On Citadel Stage

Audiences during the winter theatre season have a special treat in store.  The Citadel Theatre will be bringing an especially unique offering, starting February 3, when the Midwest premiere of Deborah Zoe Laufer’s "Sirens" hits the stage.  This will be the first chance for theater enthusiasts to see a play the Louisville Courier Journal called “funny and heartfelt...witty with a heart as big as its mouth”.  But, it will also bring Citadel Theatre founding members Scott and Ellen Phelps back to the stage, adding further dimension to the love story.

"Sirens" is a play about the struggle married couples can face in maintaining that special ‘spark’ – the flame of passion so essential to a fulfilling relationship.  In the play the lead character, Sam (Scott Phelps), is a musician living in the fading limelight of a chart topping single he wrote during his torrid courtship with wife Rose (Ellen Phelps).  Now, 25 years later, Sam and Rose head to the Mediterranean for a cruise to celebrate their anniversary.  Sam is lured overboard when the song of a Siren, the most compelling music he has ever heard, entices him to jump.  Finding himself stranded on the Siren’s island, Sam must strive to overcome depression over his faded musical talent and fight to find a way back to his wife Rose.

“This is a redemptive comedy, one that all of our audience members will be able to relate to,” said Phelps.  "It is about realizing that sometimes the grass you have is very green, but it takes time and effort to make it grow.  It’s worth it.”  "Sirens" will run at the Citadel Theatre, located at 300 South Waukegan Road in Lake Forest, from February 3 until March 4.  Patrons can purchase tickets online by visiting www.citadeltheatre.org or by calling the box office at 847-735-8554.  Reduced-rate subscription packages are now available for just $25 per show.

For the Phelps, the play represents a romantic homecoming.  Scott Phelps, also Artistic Director of Citadel, described "Sirens" as “completing the circle” to connect his relationship with wife Ellen to their own romantically destined meeting during their early days as actors.  The couple met at the Actors Theatre of Louisville in 1982, which is where they saw "Sirens" (2009 Humana Festival) and decided they had to bring it to audiences at Citadel.

Now married for over 27 years, the Phelps keep going back to where it began, not only to keep their marriage fresh but to search for the same muse that inspired them to found Citadel Theatre together in 2002.   “We make a pilgrimage back to Kentucky for the Humana Festival every year,” said Phelps.  This year he and Ellen plan to return again after "Sirens" completes its run and will take a contingent of theatre lovers with them.  “Everyone that enjoys theater is welcome to join us when we go south for the festival this year.”

Douglas Out, Sandys In

Remy Bumppo Theatre Company has regretfully announced the resignation of Artistic Director Timothy Douglas effective January 31st.  He plans to continue his freelance directing career and seek out more opportunities to pursue his interest in training theater professionals.  Remy Bumppo announced the appointment of Mr. Douglas in October of 2010, and he officially took the reins in July of 2011 after participating in the 2011/2012 season selection and casting process.

In a letter addressed to Remy Bumppo's Board of Directors, Mr. Douglas expressed, "My time with the company has been one filled with adventure, growth, insight and clarity of purpose, provided by an extraordinary learning curve.  As a result of my brief but ample tenure I came to understand that in spite of our genuine excitement for one another, I'm ultimately not a good match for the organization."  He concluded, "I remain grateful to all at Remy Bumppo, as well as the greater Chicago theater community, whose enthusiastic inclusion of me into its vibrant world will feed me for the rest of my creative days."

Board President Karen Randolph who chaired the 2010 search committee says, "The hiring of Timothy as artistic director was a unanimous decision made by Remy Bumppo's board, staff and artistic associates.  We were surprised by his decision, but wish him well, and hope to participate in his future."  On January 10th, Remy Bumppo's board of directors appointed Artistic Associate Nick Sandys as Artistic Director effective February 1, 2012.

"Timothy's tenure was inspiring, brief but valuable," said Nick Sandys, "and season planning with the Artistic Associates is well under way for our 2012/2013 Season.  I am thrilled to continue and expand the language-driven, emotionally rich work of Remy Bumppo in that coming season.  I have called this theatre home for 10 years and will bring with me my deep understanding of all that Remy Bumppo has been and a tremendous excitement for what more we can become."  Remy Bumppo Theatre Company delights and engages audiences with the emotional and ethical complexities of society through the provocative power of great theatrical language.

Outgoing Artistic Director Timothy Douglas had planned to direct the third show of the 2011/2012 season.  As a result of Timothy Douglas' resignation, the production of Lee Blessing's one-person comedy "Chesapeake," will be directed by Remy Bumppo Artistic Associate Shawn Douglass ("The Importance of Being Earnest" in 2010, and "The Philadelphia Story" in 2007).  "Chesapeake" runs March 28 through April 29 at the Greenhouse Theater Center located at 2257 N. Lincoln Avenue.  The production features Remy Bumppo Artistic Associate Greg Matthew Anderson as Kerr, a controversial performance artist who becomes a political pawn in the re-election campaign of a conservative senator.  For tickets and more information visit www.remybumppo.org or call 773-404-7336.

Nick Sandys (pronounced Sands) is an educator and an award-winning actor, director, and fight choreographer, now based in Chicago, though originally from north England.  Nick has been a member of Remy Bumppo's core company of artists, the Artistic Associates since 2001, and takes the lead as Artistic Director on February 1, 2012.  Having participated in over 200 theatrical productions nationwide, he is also an Artistic Associate at First Folio Theatre, and has performed at Goodman, Northlight, Chicago Shakespeare, Writers' Theatre, Next Theatre, Lookingglass, Marriott Lincolnshire, Drury Lane Oakbrook, Light Opera Works, Chamber Opera Chicago, as well as regionally and Off Broadway.  Furthermore, Nick has also directed shows for Remy Bumppo, First Folio, Noble Fool Theatricals, Chamber Opera Chicago, Fort Worth Shakespeare in the Park, Stage West, Circle Theatre, among others, and his Jeff-award-winning fight direction has been seen all over Chicagoland and regionally.  Nick is a certified Fight Director with The Society of American Fight Directors and has been adjunct faculty at The Theatre School at DePaul University since 1995.  He has received eight Joseph Jefferson Nominations, as well as an After Dark Award, and a Dallas Critics Circle Award, and is the recipient of a 2011 Achievement Award from The Helen Coburn Meier and Tim Meier Charitable Foundation For The Arts.  He holds MAs in English Literature from both Cambridge University and Loyola University Chicago.

Come "join the circus" as Quest Theatre Ensemble presents the Tony award winning Broadway musical "The People's Barnum!"  Set in the center ring, "The People's Barnum!" tells the true story of Phineas Taylor Barnum and the acts that made him famous.  The tale is set to Cy Coleman and Michael Stewart's legendary music and features Quest Theatre Ensemble's well known shadow/rod puppetry.  See General Tom Thumb only 25 inches from toe to crown!  Witness Jumbo, the largest elephant in the world!  Behold the oldest woman on the planet with your very own eyes!  Marvel at the feats of contortionists, gymnasts, tumblers, and stilt-dancers!  And find out first hand why The People's Barnum! is the "Greatest Show on Earth!"

Barnum.  I find this musical—about the greatest bamboozler to ever live—surprisingly inspirational.  Barnum’s achievements were astounding, and he accomplished most everything by recognizing one simple truth: 'There’s a sucker born every minute!'"

Midwest Premiere of Jack’s Precious Moment

Will Act For Food will present the Midwest premiere (and second production ever) of "Jack’s Precious Moment," by Samuel D. Hunter, directed by Azar Kazemi, opening Thursday, February 2 and running through February 25 at Chemically Imbalanced Theater, 1420 W. Irving Park.  Performances will be Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8PM.  Tickets are available at www.willactforfood.com/tix.

After Bib’s twin brother Jack is brutally killed by Muslim fundamentalists in Iraq, he begins (along with his father and Jack’s widow) trying to pick up the pieces; but his own fundamentalist Christian beliefs get in the way of making sense of senseless tragedy.  The loss of a life leads to a loss of faith, and ultimately to a loss of identity.  Maybe finding peace is as simple as a journey to the Precious Moments Inspiration Park, peppered along the way with odd haikus and a philosophical carny.  Probably not, though.  Alternately heartbreaking and hilarious, "Jack’s Precious Moment" is a darkly comic story of family and faith, of crisis and coping mechanisms.

Will Act For Food is extremely excited to bring this play to a Chicago stage for the first time.  The cast features Havalah Grace, Bryan Hart, Kevin Mullaney, and Ed Porter.  This production is WAFF’s first with new Artistic Director Andrew Jordan at the helm.  “We’ve taken some time to reflect on our artistic identity,” Jordan says, “And we’ve realized that we’re instinctively drawn toward scripts that are somehow unconventional or off-kilter, so we’re running with that: embracing the Theater of Wait.  What?”

Also in the way of firsts, this is director Azar Kazemi’s first production since graduating from the MFA Directing program at The Theatre School at DePaul University in 2011.  A high school classmate of playwright Hunter’s, Kazemi was raised in northern Idaho, where "Jack’s Precious Moment" begins.  “One of the reasons I love this script is its familiarity,” she says.  “I grew up with these people, and even if I didn't always relate to them, they helped shape who I have become; just as they did for Sam and we can see it in his work.”

In the interest of raising as much food as possible for Chicago’s hungry this winter, WAFF is implementing a new food donation discount: One dollar off per item donated, with no limit; admission can be paid entirely in food for the entire four-week run.  Additionally, WAFF is adopting the following ticket pricing schedule for this production: 1st week $5, 2nd week $10, 3rd week $15, 4th week $20.  Every week: $1 off for every nonperishable food item you donate.  All food donations benefit Lakeview Pantry.

Will Act For Food has nourished the Chicago community artistically and literally since its inception in 1997.  "We take a collaborative approach to theater; finding the light in darkness, revealing truth within fiction, and celebrating the absurd in the everyday.  By offering discounted admission in exchange for non-perishable food donations, we empower our audiences to help feed those in need."

Tranberg.  Surprised by her husband’s early return from a tour in Iraq, Sara is unprepared for the complications of his re-entry into civilian life.  Tension simmers around their gun-obsessed teenage daughter, Sara’s oddball live-in sister Abby, and Abby’s newest infatuation – a sexy, young Marine who’s keeping a secret. Oohrah! turns a comic eye to a homecoming gone awry.  LiveWire Chicago is a collective of artists who create theatre that reflects the current cultural landscape of our community through productions of original and contemporary works.  Visit www.livewirechicago.com.

The Inconvenience presents "Hit the Wall" by Ike Holter, directed by Eric Hoff, February 3–April 8, 2012.  Featuring Walter Owen Briggs, Manny Buckley, Daniel Desmaris, Desmond Gray, Steve Lenz, Layne Manzer, Shannon Matesky, Rania Salem Manganaro, Arturo Soria and Mary Williamson.  Musicians include Josh Lambert, Ryan Murphy and Will Wood.  It’s the summer of ’69 and the death of music icon Judy Garland has emboldened her gay followers.  A routine police raid on an underground Greenwich Village hotspot erupts in to a full-scale riot, the impetus of the modern gay rights movement.  That’s the well-known, oft-rehearsed myth of Stonewall, anyhow.  Smash that myth against the vivid theatrical imagination of playwright Ike Holter, add a howling live rock ‘n roll band, and you get the world premiere play, Hit the Wall.  Remixing this historic confrontation reveals ten unlikely revolutionaries, caught in the turmoil and fighting to claim “I was there.”  The Inconvenience is a community of interdisciplinary artists who seek to create a new way of experiencing art through a collaboration of music, theatre, dance, fine art and celebration.

Theatre Zarko presents "He Who," written and directed by Michael Montenegro February 4–April 8, 2012.  Featuring Nancy Andria, Karen Hoyer, Katherine Jones, Laura Montenegro, Ellen O'Keefe, Noah Silver-Mathews and Colleen Werle.  Musicians include Ben Goldberger, Stephen Lieto and Jude Mathews.  How do four brave and exhausted women share the burden of one grotesquely enormous baby?  They struggle to nurture and restrain the giant darling.  But the baby has an existential crisis, which sparks a fight for control. His tyrannical attempts to pit the women against each other ultimately test the limits of love.  Darkly poetic and arresting, "He Who" brings together live performers, puppets and original music for an intimate audience experience.  Master puppeteer Michael Montenegro conceives and directs this world premiere.  Theatre Zarko explores puppet and mask theatre as an innovative, developing art form, with a focus on building strong artistic relationships within the community.
